Anthony House--Cornwall

This entry has historical interest--if that's your 'thing'.

Driving from Devon across the Taymar Bridge border to Cornwall--the place-names change quite dramatically to an older, Celtic, language--with some similarity to Breton.

We visited 'Anthony House' --the home of the Carew-Pole family since the 1700's--and still their home--they actually live in these rooms shown in our pics. One bedroom and the huge  grounds were used for the film version of 'Alice in Wonderland'.

The Family actually goes back a lot further to the 15th Century. The building (but none of the contents) now belong to the National Trust--with the Carew family allowed to continue in residence--the current Lord is Richard Carew Pole.

The impressive thing with all UK stately homes (and there are 4000 of them) is the huge amount of furniture and paintings still there, whereas in Europe generally the big houses are totally empty.

This weird stuffed toy 'dinosaur devil dragon' was in the fireplace of a child's bedroom--a strange toy --maybe an insight into the mind of the way the British aristocracy bring up their children!?
