Clovelly

We were astonished to find that this whole town-a huge tourist atraction- has been privately owned since at least 1066 and only three families have been the owners--the current owner is a John Rous whose family has owned it for  the last 250 years. So there is an entry fee to the town..........seven pounds per adult!

It exists in a steep valley, ending in a sheltered harbour. No-one can own their house and John Rous makes all the rules. Everything is fresh painted and all the houses have flowers or decorations.

There are donkeys to go down the cobbled street--which also pull sleds for supplies to the town.

The Isle of Lundy is visible from the shore. On the coast  path away from Clovelly, there were wild moor ponies on Exmoor.
