Compton Castle and Hope Cove

First a couple of local beer labels!

Yesterday we went to this castle near Newton Abbott.

Amazingly it has been the home of the Gilbert family for about 500 years and the Gilbert descendants still live in it, still called Gilbert, with a large part now in National Trust hands. Because it is still a (splendid) home--no pics allowed.

One of the Gilberts established colonies in the new 'America's' and a recent Gilbert had a very distinguished RAF record in WWll as a fighter pilot (where he was shot down twice!) before being killed in a light plane crash in England.

Some more pics around Hope Cove. The sheep seem dangerously close to aclif edge where there have just been falls of rock.The sunlight breaking through onto Hope Cove village, looks like an artist painting, I thought.

I finally managed to find a path where I could look down on the little enclave of our thatched cottages in the old square. It's so hidden in trees and hillsides.

On the beaches, the RNLI has faithfully copied the Aussi lifeguard pattern, in every detail--not that anyone was brave enough for the cold water!
