Cyprus --Paphos-heat, sea, hotel pools and history
Cyprus is a lot like a huge version of Gibralter--replace Spain with Turkey for an awkward border crossing and you have the same 'atmosphere'--an old part of colonial Britain.
Adjusting to the sudden heat of 34 Deg C is quite something--aided by the hotel pool. We walked slowly around the old fort----- predating the Roman era --- at the colourful waterfront. The tourist office was next to useless, but other guests at the poolside pointed us to 'Micky's Tours'. Micky proved to be a business geriatric with typical Greek hospitality and he was soon treating us to Cypriot fire-water and showing us how to peel figs! We booked two tours--inland and beaches and to Mount Olympus-the latter for Mary's birthday, Tuesday.
We toured a local crowded beach and looked in shops--somehow we ended up in shoe shops--funny that.
We ate our supper (tea, dinner??) beside the pool and watched the night illuminations.
The young hotel owner-Kyriacos -is amazingly trusting and convivial--he provided a free drink and snack at the poolside for all at midday and has a very well stocked shack beside the pool--run entirely on honesty, plus cybercafe there. When I went to put some money in the box, I was amazed how much was there. He really wants everyone to enjoy their holiday, fully.
