Dark's Cave
Today I joined cousin John in Leura for a walk to Dark's cave, below Fortress Ridge, at the head of the Grosse Valley. We only made a teeny weeny navigational error at the start, corrected by use of a map and satellite map grid reference numbers!
After scrambling back out of the wrong valley , we enjoyed a really great walk, squeezing through some narrow spots, to this fascinating cave, discovered and used, in the depression years, by a Dr Black and his wife Eleanor, who wrote the classic book, "The Timeless Land".
They started the tradition of leaving cooking utensils, fire making equipment, a game of backgammon plus a log book for visitors, we also found a half -bottle of wine and some utensils. There is also a poem by her, in the book, pictured here
At the end of the day, we enjoyed a coffee in Katoomba, where this (good!) advice was on the wall.
