Gilbert White, Lawrence Oates and Jane Austen-additional Austen pics for Caryl!

We are staying with Myra (the closest person to being a sister, from my childhood)  and her  husband Trevor, In Emsworth, near Chichester.

Today, in 'English' weather, we visited the house and museum which records the life and work of Gilbert Smith in Selbourne. He was a very famous naturalist.

The museum also records the life of  Lawrence Oates, from the Antartic expedition, who famously sacrificed himself with the courageous words "I am just going outside--I may be sometime............." Lawrence came to the attention of Baden Powell in the Boer War.

Trevor was in the same army  regiment as L. Oates--but some years later on, ofcourse.....No photography was allowed inside, so I include a picture of myself with Myra and Trevor in the grounds and in the rain)

After that we visited Chawton- a village where Jane Austen lived and wrote some of her most famous novels. There were Morris dancers in the courtyard,  from nearby Alton, the 'Milden Rose' group (in blue dress) and another group, visiting from  from Hamburg.

There is a pic of the tiny table that Jane wrote at and Mary writing with a quill pen (just like she did at school..............)

I can offer no explanation for the musical tiger!!
