Hinton Ampner House

Monday night we saw a magnificent rainbow over the end of a bowls match at Farnham, where friends Ginny and Robert live. To celebrate this event we went to the 'Hare and Hounds' pub!

Tuesday we visited Hinton Ampner House and gardens (including vegetables), the home of the now deceased Earls of Sherbourne and now in the hands of the NationalTrust. This mock Georgian house, built in the grounds of an older Tudor hall, is well preserved and has extensive and colourful gardens, including magnificent  trees which go back well over 700 years.

The Georgian house was not placed over the Tudor remains, due the Tudor house being the most documented case of house  hauntings ever recorded!

A cafe warning -

The house was used for girls evacuated from Portsmouth in WWII and there is a memorial shed with some of their memories, some quite harrowing,  recorded there, with pictures. These 'girls' still return to maintain the exhibit.

Also in the  grounds is the very well preserved 13th C church of All Saints.

Once again, I am amazed that a chain of only 50 or so vicars separate us from the 13th Century

and a memorial stone in the floor at the alter end is remarkably well preserved
