Hazelhurst Art Gallery
A gallery run by the local council, a few minutes drive away, featured work by year 12 students for examinations this year . I've mostly selected local public high school students . We visited at suggestion of our daughter Caryl and husband Will (designer of this blog software) who live nearby.
The artists all showed exceptional talent and there was a lot of amazing detail.
Major themes surprised me--a representation of confused feelings young people have. Dislocated feelings about personal reality and society ; students of mixed ethnicity expressing their mixed feelings of their identity between three cultures. The one of two female faces on wood, is by the daughter of a Thai mother who was frustrated that she could not adequately communicate her feelings of Thai culture to her daughter. Expressions of femininity and environmentalism, such as the surfing pic and the Costco pic showing all the stores Costco forced out of business.
Several expressed spiritual awareness and the one that touched me was from a year 12 girl depicting her emotional journey of her recent hearing loss.
