Missenden

From Stathern we moved to Missenden. This post covers two days to today.

I've always been intrigued by the sight of Missenden Abbey when we used to visit Jacqui and family in Prestwood but could never book there.

This time we were lucky and found it delightful. Very good pricing for a plain but comfortable room, with good catering and  with 10 acres of lovely grounds and the architecture of a restored Augustinian abbey dating back to 1103. It's now a County owned education and function centre for hiring.

We had a beer in the George Ale House in old Missenden today and it must be one of the quaintest and oldest looking pubs I’ve seen. A bit similar to the Red Lion  in little Missenden. On historic buildings register it's listed as late

C 15 or early C 16--over 500 years old!

We also visited Missenden Church which we reached with a walk from the Abbey. Only 41 vicars spanning 800 years, always surprises me.

There was also a list of all grants given since 2000 for restoration. Interesting for others doing the same thing.So many pretty house window boxes everywhere and a Victorian letter box still in use, now three monarchs back!
