Mottisfont

An NT property near Romsey in Hampshire, it dates from Saxon antiquity as a meeting place or 'Moot', based on a natural spring that runs up from the ground to this day. The water runs into the River Test. It became a Priory until the Black Death decimated it's inhabitants and fortunes and later suffered much under Henry VIII's break with Rome and abolition of Catholic priories and monasteries etc. The first 'Brexit' ??

It was given to a powerful friend of Henry and stayed in private hands but became run down until 1934 when an American banker bought it and his artistic wife Maud, restored the house  and the gardens.

It's more homely than many NT places, having missed the Victorian era but is not externally 'ornate.

Some remnants of the original Saxon church are visible and a few skeletons of that era are on view! The grounds are very attractive and inviting for picniccers.
