Porlock--a world record--and a long post today

An ancient coastal fishing village -very popular with tourists.

We had Sunday roast lunch there, which Mary pronounced 'poor'!

Porlock Weir, 2 miles west, has the second highest tidal flow in the world--8 metres rise or fall each tide--part of the flow into the severn Estuary--spectacular.

This is a pic of the weir gates and the tide rises and falls the height of these. The beach is all large, smooth pebbles

The major activity for the day was a long walk through very attractive woods to Culbone Church-recorded as the smallest (~25 places) independant church building in the land and dating back 1000 years, with Saxon font. Hidden  in a steep valley, accessible only by foot, the small churchyard contains many people surnamed 'Red' --eg Ethel Red. None of us knew anyone called 'Red' nor blue , yellow, orange, mauve, purple, but hundreds called White, Black, Green, Brown, -even silver and goldsmith etc. Peculiar.

Mary made the Freudian error of leaving her camera behind,  we discovered with horror, back in Portlock weir. Panic. So we calmed ourselves with a full Devon cream tea  before Nick and I set off by car, via a feudal and hostile toll track, barred by gates and bad spelling and threatening legal actions for 'malfeasance', to an even rougher dirt path to the church, where the camera was still on the arm of a seat.

On the way home, across the deserted moors, manywild  animals appeared on the roads--some a bit scary! A gorilla even threw one of our great nephews headfirst into a flower pot!
