Roman Gods and Russians!
The Paphos archealogical site near the port is very extensive and contains the remains of many major Roman buildings and palaces--including huge mosaic floors with named Roman Gods. Several earthquakes over the centuries have reduced the buildings to rubble--which are slowly being reconstructed.
Some buildings are pre-Roman Greek amphitheatres etc.
We walked around the site in extreme heat.
Later we swam in the sea near the old port and were astonished to hear Russian being spoken everywhere.
We later found out that Cyprus is the 'in' place for Russians, Latvians, Lithuanians etc etc due to no visa requirements and cheap hotel prices. There are Russians serving in the restaurant and it is joked that Russian will soon be the major language spoken.
Does anyone recall that weekly TV comedy programme with the take-off of the Russian news --it always had the line said by the woman announcer of Victor, the male announcer --with heavy accent--"You are very unattractive man, Victor"--well, a lot of them are very 'traditionally' built!
