Sculptures at Rookwood Cemetery

Daughter Caryl invited us to join her on a visit to this 40 piece exhibition, where her art teacher had an item on display. An early one--'Pearly gates' made from milk bottles and other plastic items, was intriguing.

The cemetery is vast, humungous, with many different sections for ethnic groups in Sydney dating back over 100 years and still very active today. The sculptures were a bit hard to trace around the site. Many had some obvious or subtle  reference to departing this life and the hereafter. The 'hidden maps' sign intrigued me--how can you use a hidden map?

To me, the most thought provoking was one labelled 'Descartes', which had the word 'belief', upside down and in mirror image, cast  in concrete, suspended above the earth in which it had been cast, leaving the cavity as a shadow. Belief is suspended reality? Food for thought there.
