Kayak camp

This weekend scouts and leaders set off for Berowra Creek early Saturday morning. Arriving at the boat-ramp we set off for Windeyer scout camp, some 7Kms downstream, against a bit of a headwind. Another leader (Barra) and I were the specialist kayak advisers and water expedition leaders.

A car had brought the camp gear to a point opposite the campsite and there was a flat-bottomed rowboat to get the gear over the river to the campsite.

The weather was good, no rain or much wind,  but the night very cold indeed. I used an old ridge tent from a friend, but overlooked the fly, which would have kept in some heat.

Saturday morning Rakali showed us where to find bush tucker. We were visited by a smart and VERY tame kookaburra -it actually squatted on my hat but moved before I could get a pic.

Saturday afternoon, we completed a short, but vertiginous bush scramble to a look-out point over the river --quite a risky business, then cooked dinner and had the traditional campfire.

Sunday morning was a Scouts' Own service then Rakali treated the scouts to a demonstration of the effects of 'dry ice' which he had brought with him and they had an illustrated  physics lesson!

Then followed a well-setup challenge course and after striking camp we set off for the Berowra boat ramp again.

All-in-all a great weekend in the great Australian bush.
