Kayak trip June 20

Rerouted from our initial plan we had our break on a 'spoil heap' in the local hacking river.

This was created post war by 'Ten pound Poms' who first settled here in the 1950's. Builders dumped their excavated soil by barge, at this point in the river and over time the heap inevitably became covered in oysters which appear at low tide.

One of our kayakers, Len, who has spent his entire life as a professional oyster farmer, always has his axe and collection bag in his kayak, so set to work while the rest of us stayed safe on the sand -oyster cuts are dreadful and often very contaminated.
