What NOT to do!

We went to Saltram House (NT) next day (Wednesday July 8th)  --home of many paintings by Reynolds and the next day were treated to the sight of the RNLI Rescue Boat rescuing a couple of kayakers who got into difficulty at sea. We had a long chat with them after they were dumped on the slipway. They were VERY embarrassed!

There is a serious side to this for scout training, which comes from this incident --these so-called 'Ocean kayaks' are NOT ocean kayaks at all. They have too large and flat a base and no prow. This couple-cente of pic-close together---experienced paddlers-- fully equipped and the man --army-trained, were washed off the craft near rocks and then, after remounting --could not CUT THROUGH the surf/waves withoput being tipped off again. A true sea -kayak would cut through the surf and keep on track. These 'Ocean Kayaks' are just surf skis and must NEVER be taken on the ocean.
